ECO-SAVVINESS
In addition to using only the greenest papers (100% tree-free cotton, 100% recycled, bamboo, et al.), eco-friendly inks, and low-VOC solvents, Joie Studio actively engages in the 3-Rs:
Reduce
Joie Studio's practice of letterpress printing is actually one of the most eco-friendly methods of printing on the market today. Antique presses consume far less electricity than modern day offset presses. Our 30" cutter is a manual cutter, no electricity involved. Letterpress printing uses less ink than offset printing and subsequently uses far less solvents for cleanup. Added to that, Joie Studio pre-cuts paper to size, or close to size before printing, reducing the amount of paper waste. And, not to toot our own horn, we have extremely low spoilage in our print runs, which translates to less waste.
Reuse
Joie Studio actively reuses what we can. When we can, we use reclaimed ink from retiring printers and closed-down printshops. We use recycled rags to clean up. We save our scraps for a multitude of uses around the print shop, including setting new runs, shredding for packing materials, or upcycling the scraps. We send packages using previously used packing materials.
Recycle
The vast majority of waste at Joie Studio ends up in the recycling bin, headed to the recycling center where it will have new life as something else. Our recycling bin is actually twice as big as our trash bin. What we can recycle or upcycle, we do. It's the eco-smart and eco-savvy thing to do.
